How to Use NibbleWatch
A page-by-page guide to everything NibbleWatch does. Click any section below to expand it.
This is where you log what you eat, drink, and how you're feeling throughout the day.
Logging food: start typing and any recipe, custom food, or food you've picked before shows up instantly. Press Enter or Search to see the full list of those matches, with "Search USDA Food Database" at the top if what you want isn't already there. Clicking it replaces the list with USDA results only — it assumes you've already looked through your own matches and didn't find it there. Once you pick a USDA result, it's remembered automatically, so searching for that food again later won't need USDA at all. Choose an amount and unit, and log it. If a food isn't in the database, use "Not in the list?" to add it yourself — including optional vitamin and mineral values, which you can enter either in their usual unit (mg, mcg, g) or as %DV, since many food labels only print one or the other. "Use your own USDA key" next to the search box lets you set up a free personal key from USDA in about 30 seconds, so your searches aren't sharing a low-limit key with everyone else using NibbleWatch.
Cached Foods — every food you've picked from a USDA search is remembered here automatically, which is what makes repeat searches instant. Open "Cached Foods" (next to Frequent Foods and My Recipes) to see everything that's landed there, remove anything that looks wrong, or clear it all at once.
Date and time: every entry defaults to right now, but you can pick Yesterday or any Other Date to log something you forgot earlier — useful for catching up after a busy day. The date you pick stays selected across multiple entries so you can log a whole missed day without reselecting it each time; click "Reset to Today" when you're done backfilling.
Source: mark whether something came from your Pantry, Refrigerator, or was eaten out/elsewhere — this is what powers the "What's For Dinner?" pantry-matching tool on the Pantry page.
Water and mood: log water intake separately, and use "How's Your World Today?" to check in on your mood — moods and an optional note. Check-ins can be dismissed from the visible list without deleting them, edited later, or permanently deleted. "View Check-ins" shows your full mood history, and a separate "View Check-ins" under the food note shows your food-log history with notes attached.
A note for Safari users: you may occasionally see a banner about backing up your data or adding NibbleWatch to your Home Screen. This is because Safari has its own privacy policy that can clear a website's locally-stored data after about a week of not opening it — a Safari policy, not a NibbleWatch issue. The banners are just a proactive nudge to protect your data from that; Chrome and Firefox don't have this behavior, so those banners never appear there.
See how today stacks up against your Daily Goals — calories, macros, and micronutrients.
Had an Off Day? If you went over or under your goal on a single day, this spreads that surplus or deficit gently across the days that follow, rather than leaving it as one isolated bad day.
Net Balance Over a Range: sums your actual surplus or deficit across any date range you choose. Days with zero entries can be checked off as intentional fasting days rather than missed logging — this matters, since it's the difference between "I didn't eat" and "I forgot to log."
Macro balance nudges: both tools above also compare your protein, carbs, and fat against your goals for that same day or range, and — only when one of a handful of recognizable patterns applies — add a plain-language suggestion alongside the calorie math. For example, a day that ran high on both fat and protein (a barbecue, say) suggests leaning on vegetables and leaner proteins for the next couple of days; a day heavy on carbs but light on protein suggests prioritizing protein instead. This never changes your saved gram targets — it's a nudge, not an enforced adjustment — and stays silent unless you've set protein, carb, and fat goals for it to compare against.
Am I On Track? Looks at the last 14 days (needs at least 7 days of data to give a reliable answer) and compares your average intake to your goal range.
Export / Import: export your food log as a CSV for your own records, or to move data between devices. Importing merges new entries in without creating duplicates, so it's safe to import the same file more than once.
Get Recommended Goals calculates a starting point using your age, sex, height, weight, and activity level from Profile, plus your chosen Goal (lose/maintain/gain weight) and Pace.
Two sliders let you fine-tune the calculation: Metabolic Adjustment (a modest calorie adjustment) and Carb Priority (how your remaining calories, after protein and fat, split between carbs and fat). Both remember wherever you last left them.
"Why These Numbers?" explains exactly how your specific numbers were calculated. "Learn About Metabolism," "Water," "Protein," "Fat," and "Carbohydrates" are in-depth explainers on the science behind each — including where the science is well-settled and where it's genuinely still debated, like saturated fat.
Log exercise by type, duration, and intensity. A history chart shows your activity over a date range you choose.
A deliberate design choice worth knowing: exercise calories are not added back to your daily calorie budget. This is intentional, not an oversight — automatically crediting exercise calories back is a well-documented way fitness trackers nudge people toward overeating, since calorie-burn estimates from exercise are often inflated. Your calorie goal already accounts for your activity level from Profile.
Log sleep (bedtime, wake time, quality, notes) and naps separately. A history chart shows both over time — hover a segment to see its exact time range and quality.
View Sleep Check-ins, View Nap Check-ins, and View All Rest Check-ins show your full history for each, with an Edit option on every entry's notes.
Charts your data over time. Switch between Calories, Micro-Nutrients, Protein, Carbs, Fat, Sugar, Salt, Weight, Sleep, and Exercise using the tabs above the chart — each shows the trend for that specific measure across whatever date range you select.
Build a recipe from individual ingredients — search and add each one, and NibbleWatch automatically scales and totals the nutrition for the whole dish. Add optional written instructions alongside the ingredient list. Amounts can be entered in grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, servings, cups, and other common kitchen units.
Paste Ingredients From Text lets you paste a whole ingredient list at once (from an old recipe, a note, anywhere) instead of adding each one by hand. NibbleWatch reads quantities, units, and food names from each line and matches them against the USDA database automatically. Confident matches are added as full ingredient rows, marked with a blue border and "Auto-matched — please verify," since automatic matching isn't perfect; anything it's less sure about is left as a blank row with the search already filled in, so you just pick the right result.
Saved recipes can later be edited in place, or copied as a template to create a new variation without altering the original.
Arriving here from Pantry's AI Recipe Builder ("Send Ingredients to Recipe Mode") pre-fills the name, instructions, and ingredient list, and automatically runs it through Paste Ingredients From Text — so an AI-suggested recipe gets matched against real USDA nutrition data rather than relying on any numbers the AI itself may have guessed at.
Every recipe you've built in Recipe Mode lives here — ingredients, instructions, and full nutrition totals, ready to log directly or export.
Search filters your list as you type, matching against both recipe names and the ingredients inside them — so searching "chicken" finds every recipe that uses it, not just ones named "Chicken ___."
Recipe Packs let you share recipes with anyone else using NibbleWatch. Check the recipes you want to include, give the pack a name, and "Export Selected as Pack" downloads a single file containing them — fully self-contained, with each ingredient's nutrition data included, so the recipient doesn't need to re-search anything. "Import Recipe Pack" reads a pack file someone else sent you and adds its recipes to your own list, assigning each a fresh ID so it can never collide with recipes you already have.
Four sections: Pantry, Refrigerator (with a Fridge/Freezer location for each item), Spice Rack (spices, condiments, oils, vinegars, spice blends — anything you cook with rather than eat on its own), and Shopping List. Each has a quick-add form, and clicking its header ("Click to View / Edit") opens a popup showing everything in it as directly editable rows — no separate screen per item.
Scan Barcode to Add uses your camera to scan a product barcode and automatically look up the item, checking your own past scans first, then USDA, then Open Food Facts — falling back to asking you to name it yourself if nothing matches, which it then remembers for next time.
AI Recipe Builder checks ingredients you specifically want used (from Pantry, Refrigerator, or Spice Rack) and asks an AI provider to build a recipe around them, filling in the rest from what else you have on hand. This calls the provider's API directly from your browser using an API key you provide yourself — NibbleWatch has no server and never sees or stores your key anywhere but this device, and you're billed only for your own usage, never anyone else's. "Send Ingredients to Recipe Mode" takes the result and runs it through the same paste-in-text matching used in Recipe Mode, so the ingredients get real USDA nutrition data attached — the AI's own suggestion is a starting point, not verified nutrition information on its own.
Shopping List items have a "Goes to" field (Pantry, Refrigerator, Freezer, or Home for non-food items). The Distribute button on each item moves it into the right inventory and removes it from the list — "Distribute All" does this for every item at once. Every distributed item, including Home items, gets recorded in View Previous Purchases, so you can quickly re-add something you buy regularly.
Each Pantry/Refrigerator/Spice Rack item also has a bag icon to add it straight to your Shopping List — useful when you notice you're running low while checking what's on hand. Print Shopping List opens a clean, printable version, and the print dialog's "Save as PDF" option covers printing to a file with no extra steps.
Your basic info (age, sex, height, weight, activity level) — this is what Daily Goals uses to calculate your recommended numbers, so keeping it current matters. Height can be entered in inches or centimeters, and weight in pounds, kilograms, or stone — use the small unit buttons next to each field to switch; whichever you last picked is remembered for next time.
Also tracks your Regular Activities, Allergies, Medications, and Supplements for your own reference.
Backup & Restore — "Download Full Backup" saves everything NibbleWatch has stored on this device (every food log, recipe, custom food, cached food, pantry item, exercise and sleep entry, weight history, and setting) into a single file. "Restore From Backup" reads one of those files back in — this overwrites any matching data already on the device, so use it to recover after data loss or to move to a new device, not to merge two devices together.
Erase All Data permanently deletes everything NibbleWatch has stored on this device. Do this before selling or giving away the device — your data never leaves your device unless you export it yourself.
